Project: Community Empowerment Project In Birbhum District, West Bengal

Location: Birbhum district, West Bengal

Project Description:

There is distress migration in these area with family leaving their villages for livelihood options taking their children which impacts their health and education. They sell their animals at a cheap price for migration and small purchases and it fall into a vicious cycle of dire poverty. 

The focus of work will in 3 villages:

1) Know and Exercise Your rights - NREGA, RTI, Pension, Panchayati Raj 

2) Livelihood - Landshaping with training from agriculture experts, DRCSC 

3) Community Nursery - working with local SHG on creating nutrition gardens for overall health. 

Lot of outreach about efforts for awareness in local villages, all 12 gram panchayats in block, district and block level officials

Highlights:

The women have really embraced the community kitchen garden for food security.

Old age pension applications filed.

The land shaping and demo plots have really taken off and spread fast. Requests from other places to learn more.

Street plays done in either front of panchayat offices or where streets meet have been popular ways to engage villages in social change

District Collector is pleased with the work and has come himself to inspect and praise the work and provide full support.
