Social Advocacy & Health-Related Support For Transgender & Gender Variant Persons
Location: Murshidabad, West Bengal
Grassroots Partner: Karna Subarna Welfare Society, Madhya Banglar Sangram and Moitrisanjog
The proposed project aims to provide social advocacy and health care support for the local transgender and gender variant communities in the districts of Murshidabad and Cooch Behar in the state of West bengal. These districts have highly visible kothi and hijra communities, high presence of BSF personnel (serving as clientele for sex workers of the above communities) and minimal intervention projects for the sexual health of the at-risk communities. These districts are also not covered by the other NGO projects that provide HIV presention services to other districts in West Bengal. In addition, There have been several instances of abuse, harassment and rape, along with increased incidents of discrimination by the local community members.
The project will provide and undertake activities such as: Peer counseling, Monthly awareness raising activities, Safe spaces, Clinic services, etc (Details in attached document). The project will be organized and managed by the in association with and Moitrisanjog Coochbehar.
- Monthly advocacy and awareness raising acitivites
- Creation of Safe space
- Community mobilization through discussion, gathering, training on rights
- Monthly/bi-weekly clinic services
- Peer counseling
- Condom distribution and safe sex demonstrations
- Referral for legal, medical services that cannot be provided directly
